What is Reefer?

A reefer is a refrigerated trailer equipped with a temperature-control unit that maintains a specific temperature range while hauling temperature-sensitive freight. Reefer trailers are used for produce, frozen food, dairy, meat, pharmaceuticals, and other climate-controlled loads.

How it works

The reefer unit is mounted at the front of the trailer and runs on diesel. Carriers set a target temperature and monitor it throughout the trip. Loads often require continuous temperature tracking and a temperature log delivered with the Proof of Delivery.

Who uses it

Carriers specializing in produce, frozen food, dairy, and pharmaceutical freight. Reefer rates are typically higher than dry van rates but come with higher fuel costs and more load planning complexity.

Why it matters

Reefer loads require tighter scheduling, continuous temperature monitoring, and a higher equipment investment. Temperature excursions can result in the entire load being rejected.

In Rig Terminal

Rig Terminal tracks reefer loads with temperature milestones, attaches temperature logs to the POD, and surfaces reefer-specific lane analytics in the AI Load Scoring model.
