What is MC Number?

Motor Carrier Number

A Motor Carrier (MC) Number is the operating authority issued by the FMCSA to for-hire motor carriers transporting regulated commodities across state lines. Unlike a DOT number (which identifies the carrier), an MC number grants the legal authority to haul freight for hire.

How it works

Apply through the FMCSA's Unified Registration System along with proof of insurance (BMC-91 or BMC-91X) and a process agent (BOC-3 filing). Activation typically takes 21+ days after insurance and process agent filings are received.

Who uses it

For-hire motor carriers hauling regulated freight interstate. Private carriers hauling their own goods and carriers hauling only exempt commodities (certain agricultural products) do not need an MC number.

Why it matters

Brokers will not tender loads to a carrier without active MC authority and proof of insurance. Most load boards require an active MC number to post for loads.
