How it works
Drivers apply for the endorsement through their state DMV, pass the TSA background check, take the hazmat written test, and pay the associated fees. The endorsement must be renewed periodically. Hazmat loads also require placards, shipping papers, and emergency response information.
Who uses it
Drivers hauling any quantity of hazardous materials requiring placards. Carriers operating hazmat are subject to additional FMCSA and DOT rules including more stringent drug and alcohol testing and hazmat-specific Hours of Service allowances.
Why it matters
Hazmat freight typically pays a premium but carries higher liability and regulatory risk. Violations can result in serious fines and out-of-service orders.
In Rig Terminal
Rig Terminal tracks hazmat endorsements per driver, flags expirations, and supports placard and shipping-paper documentation on hazmat loads.
