What is DOT Number?

A USDOT Number is a unique identifier issued by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) to commercial motor carriers operating in interstate commerce or transporting hazardous materials. The DOT number is used to track a carrier's safety record, inspections, crashes, and compliance history.

How it works

Carriers apply for a DOT number through the FMCSA's Unified Registration System. Once issued, the DOT number must be displayed on both sides of every commercial motor vehicle. The FMCSA updates the carrier's record with inspection results, crash reports, and safety ratings.

Who uses it

Every interstate motor carrier. Some states also require an intrastate DOT number.

Why it matters

No DOT number = no legal authority to operate commercially interstate. Safety scores tied to the DOT number determine insurance rates and shipper tender decisions.
